UB BREAKING RESEARCH

ADVANCING GENETICS: Understanding of the interaction between human genes and those of microbes in the human gut, key to improved disease diagnosis and treatment, has taken a major step forward with research reported by a microbiologist affiliated with the School of Dental Medicine and UB’s New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences.

TARGETING DRUG DELIVERY: UB researchers have used a magnetic field as a “remote control” to deliver to tumor cells customized nanoparticles containing a powerful drug activated by exposure to laser light, underscoring the university’s strategic strength in work involving integrated nanostructured systems.

IMPROVING ADHD TREATMENT: Professor William E. Pelham, Jr., one of the world’s leading experts in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children, has received a total of $5.8 million in federal funding for two new studies designed to help determine the best treatment plan for each child affected by ADHD.

VirtualsEvals/Prehealth Committee Minor Cost Increase

VirtualEvals is a secure, web-based system through which health professions advisors can transmit letters of evaluation to health professions schools. Currently, several MD, DO and OD (optometry) schools are preferring letters transmitted through VirtualEvals. You can go to their site for a listing of all the participating schools. The optometry schools have recently jumped on board, so there may not be a complete listing yet. VirtualEvals is designed to improve the efficiency with which letters of evaluation are transmitted by undergraduate schools (senders) as well as the efficiency with which they are received and processed in admissions offices at health professions schools (receivers). This also will mean that if the schools to which you are applying accept letters through VirtualEvals, you no longer have to pre-address and stamp envelopes for each MD, DO or OD (optometry) schools. Again, be sure to check the VirtualEvals site to see what schools are participating. You would still need to complete a Release Form or grab one from the outside office area of 108 Norton. We still need your written permission to release your letters.

We will begin to use VirtualEvals this summer for transmission for letters in support of fall 2007 admission.

Because of the costs incurred to use VirtualEvals, there will be a minor increase in the Prehealth Committee fee effective Sept 1 from $35 to $40.

If you are applying through two separate professional school application services (e.g., AAMCAS for MD and AACOMAS for DO), there is an additional fee of $5 to cover the costs associated with applying through two central services.

Registration Opens June 14 for August 19 Computerized MCAT

This announcement is from Ellen Julian, PhD., Associate Vice President, Director/MCAT

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) is pleased to announce that registration for the computerized August 19th MCAT will open by June 14, 2006. A regular paper-and-pencil administration also will be offered on August 19th, but given the positive feedback from students who have taken the computerized MCAT, there is sure to be a healthy demand for the 4000 seats available in the August computerized administration. Therefore, alert your students today and encourage them to register (on or after June 14) for the August 19th computerized MCAT

The computerized version of the August 19, 2006 MCAT will be identical to the paper-and-pencil version offered the same day. However, the testing day for the computerized version is often about two hours shorter than the paper-and-pencil test day, due to greater efficiencies and less overhead related to computerized testing.

Ellen R. Julian, Ph.D.
Associate Vice President, AAMC
Director, MCAT
