MCAT Registration Announcement

Announcement from Test Administrations and Operations/MCAT

Yesterday afternoon our technical staff implemented some changes to help alleviate the bottleneck in our system. In addition to these changes, usage began to drop, although it remained steady throughout the afternoon and evening. Several thousand examinees were able to register by this morning, compared to only 553 by 4 pm yesterday. We do not yet have a permanent solution, so during times of peak usage, the system will continue to slow down.

I will continue to send updates as I learn more. We will also update our Web page as necessary. Please accept my thanks for your patience as yesterday’s excitement exacerbated our collective exasperation. We will continue to improve the system.

Gates Foundation Scholarships

SEATTLE (AP) - The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation says it will add $58 million to expand its $1 billion Millennium Scholars program to target low-income and minority students seeking a graduate degree in public health.

Gates Foundation Expands Scholars Program

Deadline for Submission of Nomination Materials: January 12, 2007 11:59 P.M. (EST).

It’s the first time the foundation has added money to the scholarship program since it was established in 1999.

The program has already given scholarships to more than 10,000 students for undergraduate education in their choice of major and for graduate work in public health, education, science, math, engineering and library science.

The foundation, which planned an announcement about the program on Monday, says it will help 20,000 students over 20 years.

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is the administrator of the GMS initiative. To reach, coordinate, and support the constituent groups, UNCF has partnered with the American Indian Graduate Center Scholars (AIGCS), the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) and the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) to assist in implementing the initiative.

The new scholarship money will be used to increase the number of minorities pursuing graduate degrees in epidemiology, biomedical science, tropical disease, public health practice and nutritional science.

The Gates Foundation spends most of its money on fighting diseases around the world and on public health, so the scholars could potentially end up working for the foundation in its other projects.

Summer Scientific Work Program

Summer Scientific Work Program (SSWP)

Started in the summer of 1965, the Summer Scientific Work Program (SSWP) at Franklin Hospital was designed to help college students decide whether or not a career in medicine is right for them. This renowned program offers students the opportunity to complete a four-week summer internship where they have the chance to observe and ask questions in order to learn more about the medical field. Throughout these four weeks, accepted students rotate through various departments in order to gain a well rounded experience of the hospital. Some of these departments include the Operating Room, Emergency Room, Radiology, Geriatrics, Laboratory, Psychiatry as well as the Rehabilitation Unit. Participants also have numerous opportunities to go on rounds with doctors, observe physicians in their private offices and attend hospital conferences.

Complementing the hospital rotations are daily lectures given by representative physicians from many of the medical specialties and sub-specialties. Some topics include general surgery, oncology and hematology, neurology, dermatology, orthopedics, cardiology and plastic surgery. Through these lectures, students learn not only about the practice of medicine, they also have the chance to learn more about all the aspects of a doctor’s life. The doctors on staff, some who are alumni of the program, are always willing to spend time with students and answer questions.
