Two New DO Schools

At its meeting last weekend, the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) granted initial provisional accreditation to Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine, Yakima, WA and Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Parker, CO.

Both colleges plan to begin instruction in late summer/fall 2008.

Information about each of these colleges is available on their college www sites:

Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences COM
Rocky Vista University COM

Each of these new colleges is in the process of joining AACOM.  Once that process is completed these colleges will be added to the AACOMAS www site for designation for applications. Until then, applicants who want to initiate an application can complete the AACOMAS application through the point of submission and payment and have their application saved for submission once the new colleges are added for designation.  Applicants who have already completed and submitted their applications will be able to add designations for the new colleges.  Once the new colleges are available for designation AACOMAS will notify all applicants in the AACOMAS system of the availability of the new colleges for designation.

If you have any technical concerns, please contact Dr. David Lang at 716-829-3005 or at langdj@buffalo.edu.

STAR Tutoring Opportunities

This message is from Manu Prativadi, a current UB prehealth student.

Matt Brennan and I (Manu Prativadi) are starting a tutoring program for academically struggling 7th and 8th graders at Gloria Parks Community Center (across from South Campus).  The program is called STAR, which is an acronym for Student Training in Attitude and Responsibility.  The STAR program’s goal is to assist students with academic problems and to create an urge in students to succeed.  The primary intention of STAR is for those students who attend the program to aspire and achieve equal or higher than a high school diploma.  The students selected for the STAR tutoring program undergo motivational exercises and academic tutoring sessions.  The program will run on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for an hour each day, with times yet to be decided.  The program will run from early September to the first week of December.  In addition, the volunteers will be meeting around twice a month to go over/practice motivational exercises for the students.

We are looking for 10 volunteers, 5 for Tuesdays and 5 for Wednesdays.  We would like reliable and motivated volunteers who are willing to grow with us and the STAR program.  If you would like more information or are interested in volunteering for the STAR program, please contact Matt Brennan (msb29@buffalo.edu) or myself (rgp4@buffalo.edu).

Thanks,

Manu Prativadi and Matt Brennan

Seeking Volunteers for “Prehealth Challenge”

If you feel you have an outgoing personality with a good sense of humor and are comfortable talking in front of a (large) group, please consider serving as our Master or Mistress of Ceremonies (MC) for the “Prehealth Challenge” on Thursday, October 4 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. This game show like event will test knowledge regarding prehealth topics in a fun and casual atmosphere.

Also, if you feel you have a solid knowledge base of prehealth related topics, please consider serving as a “judge.”  We are in need of three. The first three people to respond will be designated as judges.

If you wish to be considered for the role of MC, please make an appointment to talk with Libby Morsheimer sometime during the weeks of Sept 3 to Sept 17.   We would want to meet no later than Sept 21.  To set an appointment, please call 645-6013.  If we have multiple people who wish to serve as the MC, we will randomly select (draw a name).

Please look for future announcements regarding volunteers needed for events like the annual fall open house (Saturday, October 20) and UB Discovery Days!
