Details Regarding Off Shore (Ross and AUC) Medical School/Vet School Visits

Visit from Ross University School of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine – Thursday, Oct 16, 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. in Room 210 Student Union

Elizabeth Coccia, Associate Director of Admissions for Ross University (Dominica – West Indies), will provide students with general information as well as admission requirements and application procedures for their medical school as well as veterinary program.

Visit from American University of the Caribbean (AUC)

Ed Kulesa, Admissions Representative from AUC (St. Maarten) will be at UB on Thursday, October 23 from 3:30-4:30 in Room 210 Student Union.  Ed will present regarding general information as well as admissions requirements and application procedures for their medical program.

Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED) Announcements

AED would like to invite everyone to their first meeting this semester at 145D Student Union on September 25th at 5:15pm!

AED Mentor Program

We are very excited to introduce our Mentor Program! Freshmen, are you looking for some encouragement and motivation to get involved on campus? How confident are you in your knowledge of how to begin preparing for applying to a health professional school? Would you like some advice from an upper classman? You need to consider the AED Mentor Program! We will find a junior or senior AED member with similar interests as you who can help you navigate through the first stages of building your resume from a peer’s perspective.  If you are interested, please e-mail Ruxy (rpascanu@buffalo.edu) for more information. 

Current AED members, please consider mentoring and contact Melissa (mchrites@buffalo.edu) to see how you can get involved! Being a mentor will provide you with a unique experience. This meeting will be centered around providing participants of the Mentor Program with an overview of the program and a chance to meet all of the participants.

MCAT Review Course Auction

We are also going to launch our auction of a FREE KAPLAN MCAT Course (retail value of $1899)! For anyone who wants to take an MCAT course between now and July, 2009 please consider placing a bid! Starting bid is $500, a 75% discount!

Applying for AED Membership?

Interested in applying for AED this fall? We do request that you demonstrate an interest in the club before you apply.  Attendance at at least one AED meeting this fall is required. Attendance at other events is also encouraged. This brings us to… Red Cross Blood Drives!  AED is helping to sponsor TWO blood drives on Oct. 1st and Oct. 2nd from 9-2:30pm. Help out for as little (1 hour) to as much (ALL DAY!) as you want!  If you are interested in volunteering please contact Mark (mjniec@buffalo.edu).

Community Service

AED is also participating in UB Getting Dirty on Sat. Oct. 4th in the morning. If you are interested in helping AED and many other clubs clean the South Campus neighborhood please contact Katya (yvm2@buffalo.edu). This has been a very fun event, and AED is very excited about participating in it again this year.

All of these events will be further discussed at our meeting. And last but not least, those who come to our meeting on September 25th will be fed! We hope to see you all there,

Prehealth Committee Administrative Hours

In an effort to keep up with the increasing demand for services pertaining to the Prehealth Committee process, please note that Virginia (Jinny) Majewski, assistant to the Prehealth Committee will now have defined hours to address your questions and concerns regarding the Prehealth Committee process as well as your questions ns related to your individual letters of recommendation.   Jinny will be available to address your questions from:

9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Mondays

2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesdays

10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Fridays

If you find you need to email her or call her at other times, please provide her with a reasonable amount of time to get back to you as she hold other responsibilities in 109 Norton advising office.

These hours are effective beginning NEXT Monday, September 22.

Prehealth Volunteers Needed

On Saturday, October 18, UB will hold its annual Fall Open House Event for prospective UB students and their families.  The Prehealth Advising Office is in need of  SIX students willing to help cover an informational table.  You would assist by answering questions and providing general information regarding being a prehealth student at UB.  There are 2 shifts available: 9:00-11:00 and 11:00-1:00.  If you wish to volunteer, please email Nicole Schwab at nmschwab@buffalo.edu with your name and preferred shift.  You will receive an email confirmation and reminders prior to the date.

APMS Volunteer Opportunities

 For those of you who could not make it to our first meeting this past week, I wanted to send out an email listing the various volunteer opportunities we have coming up. If you are interested in participating in any of these activities, please email me and I will add you to the list of participants. If you do not have a car and are worried about transportation, don’t let that prevent you from signing up! We always will organize a carpool system, so not having a car is never a problem. Also, if you have signed up for any event and for some reason cannot make it, please email me and let me know. It is very important that you attend the events you sign up for.

Visit from Life University College of Chiropractic – Sept 25

Dr. Mary Flannery, Director of Recruitment at Life University’s College of Chiropractic (Georgia), will be at UB on Thursday, September 25th from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. in room 145E Student Union.  Joining her will be Dr. O’Neill, a local chiropractor who has worked with cases from family care to personal injury (including being called as an expert witness at trial).

Dr. O’Neill will discuss why people choose a career in chiropractic, as well as the benefits of the profession.  Dr. Flannery will be prepared to help students understand the questions you should ask when choosing a chiropractic school and how to find the best academic fit for your personal needs and ambitions within the profession.
