On Wednesday, November 12th at 2:15pm the Academies invites you to join us for a presentation and tour at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. We will tour the facilities and learn about the research that is conducted there as well as the opportunities available for graduate study available. Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) is America’s first cancer center founded in 1898 by Dr. Roswell Park. RPCI is the only upstate New York facility to hold the National Cancer Center designation of “comprehensive cancer center” and to serve as a member of the prestigious National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
Over its long history, Roswell Park Cancer Institute has made fundamental contributions to reducing the cancer burden and has successfully maintained an exemplary leadership role in setting the national standards for cancer care, research and education. The campus spans 25 acres in downtown Buffalo and consists of 15 buildings with about one million square feet of space. A new hospital building, completed in 1998, houses a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment center. In addition, the Institute built a new medical research complex and renovated existing education and research space to support its future growth and expansion.”
If interested in attending, please make sure to arrive at the Academies Office located in 17 Norton Hall no later than 2:15pm that day! Space is limited so please RSVP online by clicking on the link.

Public and Global Health is the future. During the past 50 years there has been a 30 year increase in global life expectancy, the greatest seen in human history. It has been estimated that 25 years of the increase has been due to public health/prevention. Because of people who work in public health, the world is healthier than it has ever been.
Public Health is a great career for people who want to make a difference. It is not boring. We are in global/public health and we love it. We want you to talk to you, for you to consider training with us.
People work in public health with backgrounds in diverse disciplines including Engineering, Medicine, Anthropology, Nursing, Physics, Environmental Sciences, Nutrition, and Exercise Science. We need people with bachelor’s degrees; we need those with M.D., DVM, and Ph.D. degrees as well. You can come fresh out of college, or senior people might consider a degree while taking a sabbatical. Ours is an inherently interdisciplinary field. We are recruiting students to enter our PhD program in Epidemiology and in Community Health. We also have openings for students interested in our MPH or MS degree programs.
Students can enroll at all points in their life; some will already have training in a clinical specialty such as nursing, physical therapy, exercise physiology, etc. and others will have a bachelors or masters degree in a related discipline such as biology, chemistry, anthropology, etc.
We offer are many exciting programs of research including foci on cancer, environmental health, heart disease and diabetes, molecular epidemiology, international epidemiology, nutrition, physical activity, genetic epidemiology and women’s health.
If you are interested in attending the workshop, send an email to: jwoltz@buffalo.edu. Information about the department can be found at the link.
