Univ of South Carolina Application Preparation Extreme

This message is from the Pre-professional Advising Office at the Univ of South Carolina

The University of South Carolina’s Office of Pre-Professional Advising is hosting its third annual intensive five-day program that assists pre-med students as they prepare for their med school application. The Application Preparation EXtreme (APEX) is a residential camp that offers personal attention to each attendee and a host of activities to help them prepare a compelling application. Applicants must have 60 hours of earned college credit by the end of this school year to attend.  The program includes a personal statement workshop with follow-up assistance, an interview skills workshop with two simulated med school interviews with written feedback, and an AMCAS orientation with helpful hints and instructions. We will also perform a human cadaver dissection, shadow in local hospitals, and have a panel presentation by students who have been through the process.  The admission director from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine will also present to the campers.  The counselors for this camp are current medical students who offer advice and assistance the entire week. This opportunity will help highly-motivated students learn how to showcase their abilities, skills, and motivation throughout the application process to med school.
Camp Specifics:
• Sunday, June 7-11, 2009
• By application only
• First come, first served
• $795, includes room, board, transportation while attending the camp, dissection, activities, and workbooks

APMS Announcements

This message is from Shannon Palermo, president of APMS,

I hope that everyone had an enjoyable winter break, and I’d like to welcome back everyone for the spring semester! This semester is packed with meetings, volunteer events, and of course our annual end of the year banquet, so I wanted to let everyone know of some particular events coming up.

Our first general body meeting will be on Feb 18th at 5pm in NSC 220. We will be featuring a guest speaker (who will be confirmed shortly), and as always, food and beverages will be served. However, this is not your first opportunity to get involved with APMS this semester!

On Sunday, February 14th (Valentines Day!) we will be serving a holiday lunch at the Ronald McDonald House. We will be meeting at UB around 11am, and serving lunch at 11:30. Please email me at palermo5@buffalo.edu if you wish to participate. In addition to the February date, we will also be volunteering at Ronald McDonald House on Sunday, February 22nd, and also Sunday, March 22nd. Both of these will be lunch services, so the meeting time will be between 10:30 and 11am. More details will come as the dates get closer.

CAREERS AND GRADUATE STUDIES IN PUBLIC HEALTH
EPIDEMIOLOGY AND COMMUNITY HEALTH
Plus food and drink in Farber Hall, Room 182
Public Health is the future. During the past 50 years there has been a 30 year increase in global life expectancy, the greatest seen in human history. It has been estimated that 25 years of the increase has been due to public health/prevention. Because of people who work in public health, the world is healthier than it has ever been.
Public Health is a great career for people who want to make a difference. It is not boring. We are in public health and we love it. We want you to talk to you, for you to consider training with us.
People work in public health with backgrounds in diverse disciplines including Engineering, Medicine, Anthropology, Nursing, Physics, Environmental Sciences, Nutrition, and Exercise Science. We need people with bachelor’s degrees; we need those with M.D., DVM, and Ph.D. degrees as well. You can come fresh out of college, or senior people might consider a degree while taking a sabbatical. Ours is an inherently interdisciplinary field.
We are recruiting students with an interest in working directly in public health and those who are interested in doing public health related research. We are looking for students to enter our PhD program in Epidemiology and in Community Health and our MPH or MS degree programs.
We offer are many exciting programs of research including foci on cancer, environmental health, heart disease and diabetes, molecular epidemiology, international epidemiology, nutrition, physical activity, genetic epidemiology and women’s health.
Come to the workshop to learn more about the exciting opportunities we can offer.
If you are interested in attending the workshop, send an email to: jwoltz@buffalo.edu. Information about the department can be found at the link.
