AED Mentor Program

This message is from Mark Niec, president of AED.

Dear AED Members,

We are still accepting people who would like to mentor or be mentored. This is a great program for freshmen and sophomores to benefit from.

Upper classmen basically give advice to the younger classmen in ways that they can make their professional school applications stronger. Email me with your name, year, major, and field of interest (dental, surgery, etc.).

APMS Announcement Regarding ER Shadowing

If you have put in an application for shadowing in the Emergency Room and have not yet heard back from me, Becca Roach (rroach@buffalo.edu), you need to re-fill out an application and submit it either on-line or to Norton 108. We have been experiencing some technical difficulties with the applications and we want to make sure that everyone that is interested in shadowing in the ER has an opportunity to do so. Thank you very much and sorry for any inconvenience.

Thanks again,

Becca Roach
APMS Shadowing Coordinator

Also, I have to let the Bills staff know by tomorrow about working the games.
So, anyone who wants to or already has signed up, let me know which orientation you can do and which games you can work. Thanks so much!

FREE FLU SHOTS FOR UB STUDENTS

Last year, hundreds of UB community members were diagnosed with Influenza or a flu-like illness. Recovery from this easily prevented illness can take 5-7 days.

UB’s Student Wellness Team will offer seasonal flu vaccine shots to UB students, faculty and staff the week of September 29, 2009 (see dates, locations below).

Please note this vaccine does not prevent H1N1 influenza. A vaccine for H1N1 influenza is not yet available.

Flu vaccines are free to UB students with valid UB photo ID. For faculty and staff with photo ID, vaccines are $20 (payable by cash or check only). Spouses, partners, or dependents of students, faculty or staff are not eligible to receive the vaccine at these clinics.

Vaccines will be administered on a first come-first served basis. You may join the line from 9 am until 3 pm. Please note: we may need to close the clinic(s) early based on vaccine availability. Please also understand that an individual’s ability to receive the vaccine is subject to medical oversight (screening forms and clinical staff on site).

UB FLU CLINICS
North Campus
Thurs. October 1, 2009
Fri. October 2, 2009: 9 am – 3 pm (depending on availability), Student Union Social Hall

South Campus
Tues. September 29, 2009
Wed. September 30, 2009: 9 am – 3 pm (depending on availability), Biomedical Education Building lobby

The flu (influenza) is a highly contagious viral illness that is most common in the winter months. It is spread by sneezing, coughing, and direct contact with an infected person. Symptoms include sudden onset of fever with chills, headache, malaise, muscle aches and pains with a dry cough and typically last 5-7 days. Some people develop secondary bacterial infections such as sinus infections or pneumonia.

The flu can be prevented with a vaccine (Flu shot). Shots must be given each year because the viruses that cause influenza mutate and the vaccine must be altered to remain effective. Flu shots are given in the fall to provide optimal protection. They start to provide protection within one to two weeks after injection.

Please RSVP for these events at the link or email us at academy@buffalo.edu

APMS - Bills Games

This message is from Sydney Domanowski, president of APMS.

Hi everyone!

So, yay! we have 14 people signed up to work some of the games, but we still need at least a couple more! So, here’s the deal:

1) We get paid by the number of people we supply for each game. And then at the end of the year we get a “bonus” of any profit over the projected profit of 3%. We also get a free meal voucher for each person at every game and free parking.

2) We have to have every member who would work any number of games go to the orientation. There are two available-Sept 30th 6-10pm or Oct 3rd 10-2pm.

3) There are 5 home games remaining we would have to commit to. Also, if god intervenes and the Bill’s make the playoffs, we do have to still work those games.

4) All of the remaining games are 1:00 games, so we would have to work 10am-5pm for each game.

Here are the remaining games:

*October 11th
*November 1st
*November 29th
*December 20th
*January 3rd

Let me know what dates you guys can do and which orientation you will go to ASAP please. You can do as much or as little as you like and if you want to have friends do it too, let me know! We are working with AED and Pre-Dental to do this, so friends from those clubs are welcome too! Thanks everyone, hope to hear from you soon so we can do this! Have a great weekend!

AED First General Meeting Recap

This message is from Mark Niec, president of AED.

AED members,

We had our first meeting yesterday. Here is a recap for those of you who could not make it:

1) The Greys anatomy season premier social was cancelled.

2) We took down names of people interested in the mentoring program. If you are interested in being a mentor or a mentee, email me with your name, major, and professional school you are thinking of attending. (e.g., med, dental, etc.)

3) There will be a Relay for Life planning committee meeting on September 28th at 6pm in 235SU. There they will be discussing different positions to help out in the planning.

4) AED and other pre-health clubs are coming together to fundraise at the Bills games. At all the home games, one of the clubs would do concessions. There will be 2 games for each club. There is a required orientation on Sept. 30 from
6 pm -10pm or Oct. 3 10am - 2pm. If anyone is interested this would be a great source for the club to make money for better events. Email me if you can make the orientations and are interested.

5) There is a blood drive on Thursday Oct. 15th. If you are interested in volunteering, send me an email with times in which you are available on that day. My email is mjniec@buffalo.edu.

Latest APMS Announcement

This message is from Sydney Domanowski, president of APMS.

Unfortunately, we could not get a room with TV in time for the Grey’s Premiere. I have scoured every corner of north and south campus and so has Mark, the AED President. Apparently basically no rooms are open past 10pm. So, we’re going to have to cancel the social. Hopefully we can try to plan another social for this semester. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I’m sorry for any inconvenience.

Also, as of right now, I only have 6 people signed up to work at least 2 Bills games this season. We need to have at least 12 in order to do this fund-raiser and we have to go to the orientation next week (either 9/30 6-10pm or 10/3 10-2pm). So, please let me know if you’d be willing. It’s a great opportunity for us to add even more events this year. Thanks! Have a great week!
