There are still slots available for the Research Associates (RA) Program at St. Vincent’s Medical Center and College in Bridgeport, Connecticut for the summer semester.
This program brings college students into the emergency department (ED) as case finders and data collectors for our clinical research. The focus of our studies is the use of the ED visits as opportunities to enhance patients’ primary health care in addition to taking care of their emergency needs. During their weekly four hour shifts this summer, the RAs will be tasked to enroll as many patients as possible in our study on prostate cancer screening.
This program provides a combination of
· exposure to all specialties of clinical medicine in the busiest ED in the largest city in Connecticut
· participation in clinical research
· clinical work with real responsibility
· interactions with a diverse urban and suburban group of patients
· at the earliest stage of their career, have the foundation of primary care as a part of all health professionals’ activities
· performance evaluations by emergency physicians and nurses
· a summary letter sent to their advisers with data on their work in the program. Applicants do need a letter from their advisers saying they are appropriate for the program.
For talented students who are looking ahead to a career in the allied health professions, the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) has designed an exciting summer program. This summer program is sponsored by the New York State Department of Education, and seeks to identify talented underrepresented students whose academic careers would be enriched by conducting research under the tutelage of faculty members at the University at Buffalo. Participants will be better equipped to gain admission into graduate programs, thereby, addressing the critical shortage of licensed allied health professionals.
The CSTEP Summer Research Fellowship Program is a six-week program designed to enhance the competitiveness of students pursuing the allied health professions who belong to groups that have been historically underrepresented. The program will strengthen participants’ research skills and expose them to the rigors of graduate study. Students are individually matched with faculty to conduct research. In addition to research experience, students will participate in a research methods course, special seminars, and fieldtrips. At the end of the six-week program, students will present their research to their peers and faculty at a research poster forum.
Candidates should have at least sophomore status with the completion of at least one year of science coursework, and intend to pursue a New York State licensed health profession in Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Medicine, or Optometry. A history of academic excellence and a strong interest in research will serve as selection criteria. A fellow stipend in the amount of $3,000 will be awarded.
Deadline: All application materials (including two letters of recommendation and an official UB transcript) must be received by Monday, March 12, 2007
Program Dates: May 30 – July 13, 2007
Fellow Stipend: $3,000
Housing: Meal allowance provided
Careers in the allied health professions present rewarding opportunities to merge scientific excellence and tangible interpersonal service. There are many prospects for individuals who are prepared to undergo a worthwhile and vigorous period of professional development. Our responsibility is to provide the expertise and resources to guide and support those who have made the decision to pursue the allied health professions. We are pleased to extend this invitation for talented students to participate in the CSTEP Summer Research Fellowship Program for 2007. Interested students may contact Ms. Crump-Owens at (716) 645-2234 or sicrump@acsu.buffalo.edu.
St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut, is inviting college students considering the health professions to join their research team in the emergency department (ED) as Research Associates (RA).
From 2 June to 12 August, RAs will be volunteering a minimum of one 4-hour shift per week in the ED:
• identifying and enrolling patients who are eligible for various research studies
• obtaining demographic and historical data
• being involved in the informed consent process
• facilitating the production of the research
In the summer semester, RAs are allowed to serve additional shifts as long as they are not taking more than one other summer school course. Since studies looking at primary health care screening in the ED form the core of the research effort, RAs will be interacting with large numbers of patients presenting with the range of problems seen in an inner city ED. Their performance will be evaluated on each shift by emergency physicians and nurses. These shift evaluations will be collated into an end-of-semester letter of assessment that will be sent on to their pre-health adviser.
From this basic activity, the potential for additional research and didactic opportunities at this major teaching affiliate of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine is limited only by the student’s initiative.
With the addition of the academic components of a formal internship, the summer program will be offered as a pass/fail, one credit course through the St. Vincent’s College. The cost for the course is $330, with an $80 administrative fee, which includes drug testing, and a $25 application fee.
On-campus housing will be available at the University of Bridgeport.
Complete information is here. This includes application materials and required health forms. Potential RAs will need a simple letter of endorsement from their pre-health adviser on official stationary. A sample letter with the elements that we require is also on the web site.
