Hi everyone!
I have tons of announcements, and I’m sorry if this is really long, but I want everyone to have as many opportunities as possible to volunteer.
1) The only Ronald McDonald House with open spaces is the December 5th Dinner from 3:30pm-7pm. (std2@buffalo.edu)
2) Diabetes Walk at Coca-Cola Field on October 17th. Please e-mail lburkard@buffalo.edu for more info.
3) We still need more people to work Bills Games! We get paid by the number of people we supply for each game. And then at the end of the year we get a “bonus” according to our profit. We also get a free meal voucher for each person at every game and free parking. We have to have every member who can work go to the orientation October 21st from 6-9pm at Bills Stadium. There are 4 home games remaining we would have to commit to. All of the remaining games are 1:00 games, so we would have to work 10am-5pm for each game:
*November 1st
*November 29th
*December 20th
*January 3rd
You can work whichever games you are able and if you want to have friends do it with you, they’re more than welcome! We are working with AED and Pre-Dental to do this, so friends from those clubs are welcome too! Also, if you go to the orientation and work at least 2 games, you will be able to attend our CPR certification course for FREE in the spring.

5) Christa will be making Trick-or-Treat Bags for Children’s Hospital on Sunday, October 25th. E-mail cfmcphee@buffalo.edu for info.
6) We will be holding a winter clothing drive for the Buffalo City Mission in early November. We’d like to make this a campus-wide event and get bins in the residence halls and throughout campus. Please e-mail mdm34@buffalo.edu to help him coordinate this event.
7) There will be any informational Army ROTC session about their Health Professional Scholarship Program on November 4 from 6-8pm in NSC215. Free Pizza and refreshments will be available. E-mail mjs83@buffalo.edu for more info.
8. We will be hosting a Buffalo Bills Party at the Kaleida Waterfront Nursing Home on November 15th. Also, if you’d like to volunteer at any time at the Kaleida Waterfront, contact us also, as we can connect you with their volunteer coordinator easily. Please e-mail sckahn@buffalo.edu for info.

I’m currently working on making a calender to send out to everyone. As soon as I find a program that everyone has, I’ll get it done. Thanks so much and have a great week!
This message is from Robin Comeau, coordinator of the UB Dental School Clinical Observation Program.
Due to the number of applications I have already received and due to the additional vaccination requirements for health care workers (Influenza), I am going to have to close the applications for the UB Dental Clinic Observation Program for this semester. This will give me a chance to process the ones I have and make the necessary revisions to the application for the Spring semester.
The following changes will be made to the application process:
1) Annual seasonal Influenza vaccination will be required (also H1N1 for 2009-2010) [effective now]
2) Program will be limited to individuals enrolled in either their second or third year of post - secondary (i.e., college) education.
3) There will be a limit of 25 program applicants each semester (September 1 & January 1).
4) Once accepted, applicants can participate for two consecutive semesters.

If you have put in an application for shadowing in the Emergency Room and have not yet heard back from me, Becca Roach (rroach@buffalo.edu), you need to re-fill out an application and submit it either on-line or to Norton 108. We have been experiencing some technical difficulties with the applications and we want to make sure that everyone that is interested in shadowing in the ER has an opportunity to do so. Thank you very much and sorry for any inconvenience.
Thanks again,
Becca Roach
APMS Shadowing Coordinator
Also, I have to let the Bills staff know by tomorrow about working the games.
So, anyone who wants to or already has signed up, let me know which orientation you can do and which games you can work. Thanks so much!

Please see how the Blue Line drops off students at local, downtown hospitals. This may be useful to you if you wish to shadow or volunteer at such hospitals.
UB Blue Line Offers Faster South Campus-to-Downtown Access
In response to ridership demand, UB’s Parking & Transportation Services has created a new, faster and more convenient UB Blue Line shuttle service that connects the Downtown and South Campuses.
The NEW Blue Line merges the routes of the original Blue and Orange lines into a more convenient direct-to-downtown ride without the hassle of connecting from shuttle to shuttle. The Orange Line will be discontinued.
The Blue Line is designed to more effectively connect the campuses by increasing the number of departures and eliminating unnecessary stops.
Two Blue Line shuttles will operate daily, with the first shuttle departing South Campus’ Parker lot at 6:25 AM each weekday, and the final shuttle dropping off at Main Circle at 8:30 PM. Each shuttle will serve the following stops (in this order):
Stop Location Departs twice an hour, on the
1. Parker Lot :25 & :55
2. Hayes Hall :29 & :59
3. Main Circle :30 & :00
4. Main-Bailey Lot :31 & :01
5. Clement Hall :33 & :03
6. Goodyear Hall :34 & :04
7. Squire Loop :35 & :05
8. Buffalo General Hospital (BGH) :51 & :21
9. Roswell Parking Cancer Institute (RPCI) :53 & :23
10. Center of Excellence (COE) :55 & :25
11. Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) :00 & :30
12. UB Downtown Gateway (M. Wile Building) :05 & :35
13. Allen Station :10 & :40
The new route took effect Monday, September 14, 2009.
This mesage is from Sydney Domanowski, president of APMS.

Hey everyone-
We are planning to volunteer for another walk next month, the American Diabetes Association’s Walk to Fight Diabetes on Saturday, October 17th. It’s at Coca-Cola Field (Dunn Tire Park) and we are going to try to set up a carpool there so that we don’t all have to find our way out there. I’m not sure what kind of hours we would be looking at but it would probably be a morning/afternoon time slot. I’d like to get an idea of how many people are interested in volunteering before I contact the ADA so please let me know ASAP (my email is
lburkard@buffalo.edu) if you’re interested and I will get information to you as soon as possible. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon!
~Lauren Burkard
5) We will be volunteering for at three Red Cross Blood Drives this semester. Also, participating in these events allows us to enter members into a raffle for a $400 scholarship for the following year. Becca is in charge of these, so e-mail her for more info(rroach@buffalo.edu).
6) We will be volunteering for UB Gettin’ Dirty on October 11th with AED, we basically just clean up around south campus to make the community a better place. This event gets us SA credit for the semester. E-mail me if you want to volunteer for this event (std2@buffalo.edu).
7) We will be making Trick-or-Treat Bags for Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo on October 25th. (cfmcphee@buffalo.edu)
8 We will be holding a book drive in October to provide books to a Community Center in Rwanda which is book-less and converting to English. Becca will be in charge of this (rroach@buffalo.edu).
9) We will be holding a winter clothing drive in early November for local children and families. Matt will coordinate this. (mccluremd@gmail.com)
10) We’re going to be working on providing CPR Certification classes free of charge to APMS members. John will be working on this. (jbjr3@buffalo.edu)
11) We will be connecting APMS members with the Kaleida Waterfront Nursinghome. You can volunteer there whenever you’d like through our club. Stacie is taking care of this opportunity (sckahn@buffalo.edu). We’re also going to be hosting a Buffalo Bills Football Party in November with the residents there. More details to come.
Shadowing will be available throughout the semester. If you have any issues filling out our online form, please attach a copy of your application in an e-mail to one of the shadowing coordinators. Dr. Spurgeon is currently our ER physician and we’ve gotten approval to start our second ER physician soon. For specialty shadowing, we currently have a Cardiologist, Gastroenterologist, Pediatric Endocrinologist, and Sports Medicine Specialist. We have approved two Family Medicine Practitioners and will hopefully start them soon as well.
Hopefully we will be able to fill everyone’s shadowing and volunteer needs for the semester! Please let me know if anyone has any other ideas or events they want to take part in or coordinate! See you all at the next meeting and have a great week!

I just wanted to send out a reminder for our first meeting of the semester THIS Thursday, Sept. 10th at 5:30pm in Baldy 101. Dr. Spurgeon will be discussing shadowing, Prehealth advising will be there to answer any questions students have, and we’ll have sign-ups available for all of the events for the fall semester. And, of course, free food!
Also, the Annual Prehealth Picnic is THIS Sunday, Sept. 13 12pm-4pm in the Southlake Community Center. Hopefully everyone can make it!
Finally, and unfortunately, the staff of The Lighthouse Free Medical Clinic has decided that they are going to reconfigure their database system in order to better serve their needs. So, we will be unable to volunteer there until they have completed the transition to a new database. As soon as we are able to volunteer there again, their coordinator is supposed to e-mail me and I will let everyone know as soon as possible. Sorry for the change.
See you all soon, have a great week!
