IMPORTANT: Prehealth Committee Procedures for Spring 2008

If you plan on coming through the Prehealth Committee for APRIL 1, 2008 in support of your 2009 professional health school application, please carefully read the following information.  Again, you will need at least 4 individual letters of recommendation by APRIL 15, 2008
Please turn in your materials to Virginia Majewski in 109 Norton Hall.  Her phone is 645-6012; email – vmajewsk@buffalo.edu.  You will need to set aside at least 10 minutes so that she can review your packet with you.  Please do not simply drop off your materials to the office and leave.

If your last name begins with A-L, please turn in all your materials by 4:30 p.m. TUESDAY, APRIL 1.

If your last name begins with M-Z, please turn in all your materials by 4:30 p.m. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2.

YOU ARE SUBMITTING:
1) A printed copy of Prehealth Committee Application/Data Sheet - http://www.prehealth.buffalo.edu/pdfs/datasht2.pdf
2) Unofficial Transcripts from UB (My Grades off of MyUB) and any transcripts from transfer work.

3) Items #7-9 from the Prehealth Committee Application/Data Sheet
4) Personal Statement - #10 on the Prehealth Committee Application/Data Sheet
5) Be sure to read and answer appropriately #12 on the Prehealth Committee Application/Data Sheet.  Please be sure to read the question carefully and contact us if you are unsure how to answer it. You want to report any disciplinary action/academic integrity issue regardless of whether you completed the required community service hours or regardless of whether you applied for the record to be expunged or you believe any record has already been expunged.
6) $40 fee.

If you are applying to two types professional health schools (i.e., MD and DO), the fee is $45 to cover the costs of transmitting your letters electronically through VirtualEvals to the MD and DO schools. The fee covers the expense overall of paper, copy services, and envelopes.
7) A black and white headshot (if possible).  If not, we will take a quick photo here to be sure we are appropriately tracking all your Committee info.

The ONLY materials sent on to the professional schools from our office include your individual letters of recommendation and Prehealth Committee composite letter.  We do not forward your essay, Prehealth Committee application, photo, transcripts, etc.
The SRC in 232 Capen must forward your official transcripts to the centralized application services or individual schools (whichever is applicable for you).

Setting the Interview
Once you have submitted all your materials and have at least four letters in, you will be assigned a Prehealth Committee interviewer.  In 3-5 days, you will be emailed your interviewer’s name and contact information.  It is important that you contact this person promptly.  They will be expecting to hear from you to arrange the date and time of your interview. Please do arrive more than 10 minutes early for your interview but strive to be on time.

Please do not ask us to accept your application past the deadline or assign your interviewer without at least 4 letters by April 15.  Doing so holds up the process for the entire pool. Our goal is to complete your letters by mid-to-late June so you are all very timely in having a completed packet. Early, complete applications to the professional health schools are highly advocated.

AAMC FAP Program

As reported by the AAMC in AAMC STAT on January 13, 2008:

The AAMC’s Fee Assistance Program (FAP)–which helps defray the cost of applying to medical school and taking the entrance exam–is now accepting applications for 2008. The FAP reduces or waives fees associated with the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) and the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) for applicants whose annual family income is 300 percent or less of the federal poverty level. To receive fee assistance this calendar year, qualified applicants must obtain approval from the FAP prior to registering for any MCAT 2008 test dates or entering into the AMCAS 2008 medical school application cycle.

In 2007, more than 6,000 people applied for fee assistance; about 80 percent were approved or tentatively-approved (pending receipt of documentation).

MCAT Registration Dates for April/May 2008

The administrators of the MCAT have announced that they expect to open registration for the April and May MCAT administration dates NEXT Wed, December 5.   At this time they cannot announce a specific time of day for the opening.

Please note that taking the MCAT in April, May or early June is strongly advised *if* you are adequately prepared.  It also leaves time for you to take the exam an additional time if necessary. Because the applicant pool continues to increase nationally, you will want to register for the MCAT early to help assure your desired test date and location.

Important Student Health Insurance Announcement

New Waiver Requirement for Student Medical Insurance

UB Students: The UB Student Medical Insurance Waiver/Enrollment Process
has changed.

Please be advised the University at Buffalo Student Medical Insurance
Plan waiver requirement is now an annual process. If you have waived
this coverage in the past, you must enroll or waive each year starting
with the academic year 2007-2008. Domestic students may enroll, waive
or verify your own coverage by visiting the UB Student Insurance Office
website (international students must still use a paper process but the
form is on the website): Here are some things to think about:

• If you’re covered under your parents’ plan, coverage may end at age
19 or 21.  Most health plans have age restrictions that limit coverage for
 dependents;

 • You may not be covered away from home or abroad. Be sure your current
policy covers you in the Buffalo area; and,

 • You may not have prescription drug coverage. With the cost of
prescription drugs growing by double digits, you need all the help you
can get. The UB Plan includes unlimited prescription benefit at the Sub
Board I Pharmacy. The UB Student Medical Insurance Plan offers you these assurances.
Please note: Students who successfully complete their on-line waiver
prior to the first Fall 2007 bill will not be charged for insurance on
their tuition bill. All full-time undergraduate and graduate students
and all international students are automatically enrolled in a Student
Medical Insurance Plan unless proof of comparable coverage is provided
to the University by October 2, 2007 the final waiver deadline.
Students that do not submit proof of comparable coverage will be
enrolled in the plan and the insurance premium will be charged on the
student’s tuition bill.  Also, for students who may be getting student
loan refunds, if you waive before the refund is processed, you will get
the entire refund UP FRONT instead of getting all but the insurance
amount and then a second refund check later.
The UB Student Medical Insurance Plan offers you:
• Access to Aetna’s nationwide network of health care professionals,
including primary care and specialist doctors including Kaleida Health
 Systems;

 • Travel Assistance Services and Worldwide Medical coverage while
 traveling or studying abroad;

 • Vision, Fitness and Alternative Health Care Discount Programs in the
 Buffalo Area; and,

 • All students can purchase Vital Savings, a discount program that can
be used across the country at participating providers for dental,
vision, alternative health care and fitness.

Questions?  Customer Service at Chickering can help with the new on-
line process for waivers, enrollment, answering policy coverage questions
 and more.  Call 1-800-954-5793
