Hope you’re all enjoying the weather and your time off from school! I just wanted to remind everyone that the Ride for Roswell is on Saturday June 27th at UB’s North campus. We will be volunteering as a group to help out where they need us before, during, and after the ride, we won’t actually be riding in the race.
Currently we have a total of 4 volunteers for the day and we need at least one more person to volunteer as a group. So please sign up so we can participate in this worth-while volunteer opportunity!
To participate, please e-mail Lauren Burkard at lburkard@buffalo.edu as soon as possible. In order to sign-up we have to have 5 members in our group signed up prior to the volunteer orientation sessions. Then, each of the participants has to attend one of the orientations which are on Wed. June 3 or Thurs. June 11th from 5-7pm on North Campus.
For more details and for a link to the website and forms to sign-up, please e-mail Lauren as soon as possible! lburkard@buffalo.edu
Thanks so much, stay involved, and have a great summer!

The Gateway to Dentistry Program is a unique, 2-week internship that provides college students with lectures, hands-on exercises, and clinical observation experiences to familiarize them with the many facets of the profession and with dental school life.
* Students are paired with a student mentor, who they observe in the
clinic delivering direct patient care, and spend several lunch
hours with to build rapport and allow your students to ask
questions in a relaxed setting.
* An overview of the NJDS admissions and Financial Aid processes,
along with an individualized admissions consultation with a member
of the admissions committee round out the program.
Twice each year 30 college students from across the United States experience the Gateway to Dentistry program. Approximately one-fifth to one-fourth of each NJDS incoming class is comprised of Gateway graduates.
The link to the program website is here and describes the program more fully, direct students as to how to apply on-line, application deadlines and what supporting documentation is required (a current transcript and a letter of recommendation from a health professions advisor or a basic science instructor).

The Admissions and Student Affairs Office at UC Berkeley’s School of Optometry is pleased to announce that we will once again offer our summer “Opto-Camp” program. We will offer two sessions this summer, June 15-17 and July 20-22.
The goal of Berkeley Optometry’s Opto-Camp is to introduce underrepresented pre-health science majors to Optometry as a potential future career track and to prepare them to be successful applicants to optometry school. The objective of Berkeley Optometry’s Opto-Camp is to present a three-day “in residence”
experience that will provide participants with opportunities to learn about the profession of optometry and the process of becoming an optometrist.
Please note that this year we have incorporated a $100 program fee due to budgetary constraints, however, we are also offering a limited amount of scholarships per session.
Program specifics and the application are linked here.
The application deadline is Monday, April 27, 2009.

If you are a prehealth intended student and need to complete a year of physics with lab as an admission’s requirement AND feel you need a refresher for physics OR have never taken physics in high school, we would encourage you to consider taking PHY 100 - Introduction to Physics.
Physics 100 in summer Session J (May 18 to June 26) as well as Session M (June 29 to August 7) is intended for students who may have difficulty with PHY101/102. PHY 100 covers the math and some basic concepts in PHY101 and is intended to prepare students for future required physics courses.
The Research Associates (RA) Program has grown such in the past year that we now have two positions available for Chief Research Associates. We are looking for graduating seniors or post-bacs who have solid GPAs and test scores for whom a year of clinical research work will have a significant impact on their application to medical school.
Chief RAs:
- work as the administrative assistants for the program
- are responsible for day-to-day supervison of the RAs serving in the emergency department as data collectors in our clinical research this includes significant patient contact in the emergency department
- have direct involvement in all aspects of the research from study initiation through publication, this includes work to associate authorship on a clinical paper.
- participate in all research meetings, this includes presenting our work to the Institutional Review Board and at regional and national meetings
- assist in recruiting new RAs and their orientation to the program, this includes formal lecturing and direct bedside teaching
These are:
- one-year commitments of approximately twenty (20) hours per week starting in mid-May and ending when medical school starts.
- unfunded, except for grants
- Chiefs will be a part of the grant-writing process, so they will “sing for their supper”
- In the past, Chiefs have routinely held other paying positions
So far, all of our Chiefs have matriculated to medical school, except one, who went on to a PhD program in clinical research.
There are still slots available, but it’s “first come, first serve” until positions are filled. Again, details are the web link above.
