Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine Announcement
The Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University partnered to establish an exciting medical school program called the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine (CCLCM) of Case Western Reserve University. The goal of this innovative program is to educate a small group of highly qualified students who seek to become physician investigators. The first class of 32 students matriculated in July 2004, and our fifth class entered this July.
On May 14, 2008, Delos M. Cosgrove, M.D., President and CEO of Cleveland Clinic and the Board of Trustees, announced that the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University is providing all our students with full tuition scholarships, beginning with the 2008 –2009 academic year. Students enrolled in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University will receive a full scholarship covering tuition and fees. We recognize that significant debt hinders the potential for a medical school graduate to pursue a career as a physician investigator. We want to ensure that financial constraints do not preclude our graduates from following their dreams.
The CCLCM (College program) is a distinct program within the CWRU School of Medicine with a unique curriculum aimed at integrating basic science, research, and clinical training. The College program will extend over 5 years in order to ensure a substantive research experience. The 5-year curriculum will culminate in a MD degree with an optional master’s degree. We offer extensive small group teaching and hands-on experience in both basic/translational and clinical research.
Following research in the summer, an innovative organ-system based MD curriculum with substantial clinical experience begins the first year in September. A research thesis is required and our students will have the opportunity to identify a thesis adviser from a large number of top clinical and basic science investigators at the Cleveland Clinic, the CWRU School of Medicine, and CWRU’s other clinical affiliates. All research advisers will be individuals who are dedicated to developing a close mentoring relationship with medical students.
Students interested in applying to the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine must apply to Case Western Reserve University through the American Medical Colleges Application Service (AMCAS). Information about AMCAS is available at the link. Once the AMCAS application is received, applicants will be encouraged to complete CWRU’s on-line secondary application, which includes instructions on applying for the new 5-year research-oriented College program, the existing 4-year University program, the MSTP program or all three.
