Association for Premedical Students (APMS) Announcements

This message is from Sydney Domanowski, president of APMS.

Our Winter Clothing Drive for the Buffalo City Mission began Friday, November 13 in the Student Union from 10am-5pm and we will have boxes out in residence halls all weekend. Remember to bring your lightly used or new winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, socks, etc… to help those in need in our area. There is a huge need in Buffalo and we hope to make an impact this winter season, so go through your closets and find the things you don’t need or wear anymore!

Also, I have a note from an APMS member about making donations to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital:

Hey APMS members!

My name is Adam Gregor and I’m a fellow member of APMS. I’m just writing to let you know of a campaign by St. Jude’s Hospital this holiday season. I work at The Melting Pot (located in the Galleria Mall) and we have teamed up with St. Jude’s for the Thanks and Giving Campaign. The Melting Pot has been a member since 2003, helping to raise more than $4 million. Our goal, as a franchise, is to donate $1.4 million, the cost for St. Jude to operate for one day. The Buffalo location is hoping to raise $12,500.

As some background for those of you who don’t know of St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, it was founded in 1962 by Danny Thomas. Researchers at St. Jude’s freely share their information with doctors and hospitals around the world (something that sounds logical, but is not common due to competition between hospitals) and accepts patients for treatment without regard to insurance coverage or the family’s ability to pay. As part of The Melting Pot’s campaign, for every $10 donation, you will receive one “Fondue for the Kids” card. This card is good for $20 off any purchase of $50 or more on a future visit to The Melting Pot (you essentially double your money!).

The offer will expire on 12/30/2010, is not valid with any other offer or on holidays or special events, cannot be used for gratuity or taxes, and one card can be used per couple per visit. If anyone has any questions or is interested in donating, I can be reached at argregor@buffalo.edu. Thanks!

We still need more people to work Bills Games! We get paid by the number of people we supply for each game and then at the end of the year we get a “bonus” according to our profit. We also get a free meal voucher for each person at every game and free parking. We have to have every member who can work go to the next orientation at Bills Stadium this month. All of the remaining games are 1:00 games, so you would have to work 10:00am – 5:00pm for the games you work:

*November 29th
*December 20th
*January 3rd

You can work whichever games you are able and if you want to have friends do it with you, they’re more than welcome! We are working with AED and Pre-Dental to do this, so friends from those clubs are welcome too! Also, if you go to the orientation and work at least 2 games, you will be able to attend our CPR certification course for FREE in the spring.

We will be hosting a Buffalo Bills Party at the Kaleida Waterfront Nursing Home on November 15th from 12-5pm. Rides will be provided. Also, if you’d like to volunteer at any time at the Kaleida Waterfront, contact us also, as we can connect you with their volunteer coordinator easily. Please e-mail sckahn@buffalo.edu for info.

Our last meeting of the semester will be December 1 at 5:30pm in Fronczak 454. This will be our annual Medical School Student Panel. They will give great insight into the world of medical school and are wonderful to learn from! We will have snacks and will be taking ideas for next semester’s volunteer events.

Thanks so much and have a great week!

Minorities in Health Related Professions (MHRP)

This message is from Jennifer Rahman, president of MHRP. MHRP would like to invite you to our upcoming events:

CSTEP is coming in for our last general body meeting (THIS Thursday, Nov. 19) at 6 pm in 330 SU (3rd floor Student Union) to give a presentation about leadership and what opportunities are available to students at UB. This will be an informative session, especially for freshmen and sophomores, in getting to know about all the things a student can do to become more involved in their undergraduate career.

Big Brother Big Sister “Bigs for a Day” is at 6:30 pm (same day/place, Thursday November 19 in 330 SU, 3rd floor of Student Union). We will be having an Ice Cream Social, movies, and board games available for a group of about ten children from Buffalo to come and have fun while learning all about UB and our club! Feel free to come and bring your friends, as we’ve been participating in “Bigs for a Day” for the past few years and it always promises to be a fun time

We will be making dinner for families at Ronald McDonald House on Friday November 27, the day after Thanksgiving. We will meet on campus around 2:00 pm to go shopping at Wegmans for food and travelling together to the House. We anticipate serving dinner by 6:00 pm. Please let us know if you can help out with this if you are in Buffalo for the holidays. Please contact Jennifer Rahman at jrahman@buffalo.edu. More information will also be provided at our meeting on Nov 19.

MHRP is raffling off tickets for a Winter Gala ticket at $1 per raffle ticket! The Winter Gala will be held on the evening of Saturday, December 5 at the Buffalo Convention Center (transportation will be provided to and from the Center to UB) and is a night filled with dinner and dancing (open bar for those 21 and up). A student ticket normally costs $30, and depending on interest shown in our raffle for a ticket, we might be able to raffle off more than one! Raffle tickets will be available at our meeting on the Nov 19, however if you can’t make it, feel free to contact Jennifer at jrahman@buffalo.edu.

ALL students are welcome at ALL events!

veCollect Update

This is an update as to where we are in terms of implementing a paperless reference letter system for use by the Prehealth Committee. It will directly affect anyone applying to the April 1, 2010 Prehealth Committee for a fall 2011 admission.

We are currently in contact with the vendor confirming several features to assure that the process runs smoothly when we begin the actual transition. We would like to see the complete testing of all the features to assure that the process is seamless once we open it up to the UB prehealth student population. As our institution involves a large population of potential users, our primary concern is the convenience and efficiency for all users involved (e.g., students, evaluators, professional schools). As such, we are going to reexamine where the vendors are at in early January 2010 before we open the veCollect system. In the interim, we will allow applicants to begin to request and collect letters using the system we have been using for the past several years.

Effective immediately, you can begin to ask recommenders for a letter and they have the option to submit them to our office before January. In order to have letters submitted to our office, you must first complete the top portion of the Letter of Recommendation Request Form and then give it to your recommender. He or she will then provide the reference and submit it to our office via paper. Please note that if they attach a letter of recommendation as opposed to using the actual form, the letter needs to be on letterhead stationery with their signature. Letterhead paper and the evaluator’s signature are REQUIRED. We will need to return any letters not on letterhead and/or missing a signature.

If, by early January the veCollect system is running to our satisfaction, we will send you an authorization code to open an account after you have attended a veCollect workshop. All workshops for fall 2009 and spring 2010 will be posted at the link.

Once veCollect is up and running, you will simply add the names of any evaluators on veCollect who may have already submitted letters for you via paper between now (November) and January. Our office will upload the paper letters into the veCollect letter system for you once you have opened an account and have created an entry for your evaluators.

Any questions you have can be answered by any of the prehealth advisors in 109 Norton Hall. Please set an appointment by calling 645-6013. Quicker questions can be answered via email. Jinny Majewski (vmajewsk@buffalo.edu) administrative support to the Prehealth Committee can assist you as well with any veCollect logistical questions.

Thank you for your patience while we make this transition. Again, the efficiency, accuracy, and convenience of the system for all users remains our primary goal.
