Latest APMS Announcements
This mesage is from Sydney Domanowski, president of APMS.
Hi all new and returning APMS members!
Thanks so much to everyone who came to the Prehealth Picnic, it was a great success!
I just wanted to send out an updated volunteer and social opportunities list for this
semester:
1) APMS will be involved in making meals for Ronald McDonald House of Buffalo.
We leave from UB North campus, make the meal, and can also get a tour of the house. We can have up to 12 people attend each event, so sign-up early (std2@buffalo.edu)! Rides will be provided for each available date. Here are the dates:
*Sunday, September 27th from 11am-2pm-FULL *Sunday, October 18th from 3:30pm-6:30pm *Sunday, November 22nd from 3:30pm-6:30pm *Saturday, December 5th from 3:30pm-6:30pm
2) Linda Yalem Safety Run-September 27th. Christa will be coordinating this event, so e-mail her for more info. (cfmcphee@buffalo.edu)
3) Grey’s Anatomy Season Premiere Night Social! Thursday, September 24th from 8pm-11pm. We will announce the location for this event as soon as it’s finalized, but it will be on campus. We will have snacks available and you’re welcome to bring anyone you want! Please rsvp to std2@buffalo.edu so we have a round-about count as soon as possible.
4) American Diabetes Association’s Walk to Fight Diabetes on October 17th. Lauren Burkard is in charge of this event and here’s a message from her:
Hey everyone-
We are planning to volunteer for another walk next month, the American Diabetes Association’s Walk to Fight Diabetes on Saturday, October 17th. It’s at Coca-Cola Field (Dunn Tire Park) and we are going to try to set up a carpool there so that we don’t all have to find our way out there. I’m not sure what kind of hours we would be looking at but it would probably be a morning/afternoon time slot. I’d like to get an idea of how many people are interested in volunteering before I contact the ADA so please let me know ASAP (my email is
lburkard@buffalo.edu) if you’re interested and I will get information to you as soon as possible. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon!
~Lauren Burkard
5) We will be volunteering for at three Red Cross Blood Drives this semester. Also, participating in these events allows us to enter members into a raffle for a $400 scholarship for the following year. Becca is in charge of these, so e-mail her for more info(rroach@buffalo.edu).
6) We will be volunteering for UB Gettin’ Dirty on October 11th with AED, we basically just clean up around south campus to make the community a better place. This event gets us SA credit for the semester. E-mail me if you want to volunteer for this event (std2@buffalo.edu).
7) We will be making Trick-or-Treat Bags for Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo on October 25th. (cfmcphee@buffalo.edu)
8 We will be holding a book drive in October to provide books to a Community Center in Rwanda which is book-less and converting to English. Becca will be in charge of this (rroach@buffalo.edu).
9) We will be holding a winter clothing drive in early November for local children and families. Matt will coordinate this. (mccluremd@gmail.com)
10) We’re going to be working on providing CPR Certification classes free of charge to APMS members. John will be working on this. (jbjr3@buffalo.edu)
11) We will be connecting APMS members with the Kaleida Waterfront Nursinghome. You can volunteer there whenever you’d like through our club. Stacie is taking care of this opportunity (sckahn@buffalo.edu). We’re also going to be hosting a Buffalo Bills Football Party in November with the residents there. More details to come.
Shadowing will be available throughout the semester. If you have any issues filling out our online form, please attach a copy of your application in an e-mail to one of the shadowing coordinators. Dr. Spurgeon is currently our ER physician and we’ve gotten approval to start our second ER physician soon. For specialty shadowing, we currently have a Cardiologist, Gastroenterologist, Pediatric Endocrinologist, and Sports Medicine Specialist. We have approved two Family Medicine Practitioners and will hopefully start them soon as well.
Hopefully we will be able to fill everyone’s shadowing and volunteer needs for the semester! Please let me know if anyone has any other ideas or events they want to take part in or coordinate! See you all at the next meeting and have a great week!
