Special Event: Hospice Volunteer Info Session

On April 14 at 4:00 p.m. (Room to Be Announced) Ms. April  DiPizio, the Manager of Volunteer Services for Hospice Buffalo, will be speaking regarding volunteering opportunities at Hospice for UB students.  More information about their volunteer program can be found at the Hospice of Buffalo website.

What is Hospice?
Hospice is a compassionate approach to care whose goal is to help people with serious illness live life fully, maintain their dignity and keep control over their lives. In medieval times, hospices were inns of rest which “lodged, cherished and refreshed” the Crusader, the sick and the dying. Today, Hospice provides medical care, emotional and spiritual support to people and their families facing life-limiting illness in homes, hospitals, adult facilities, nursing homes, group homes and hospice residences. Hospice is available to any one with an illness whose life expectancy is measured in months, rather than years.

Why Hospice?
Unique physical, emotional, spiritual, social and financial needs occur during the final phases of life-limiting illness. Hospice provides experienced, skilled specialists who give needed help and support during this difficult time. The Hospice team works with the attending physician and family to develop care which meets the patient/family needs and wishes concerning treatment and lifestyle.

Who Uses Hospice Care?
Hospice serves persons of any age with any life-limiting illness. Among the illnesses our patients have had are: cancer, cardiac disease, renal disease, neurological illnesses, Lou Gehrig’s disease, AIDS, cirrhosis, leukemia, and others.

Hospice is always looking for very mature, compassionate and caring individuals to serve as volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering in this very special environment, please consider attending.  Due to the nature of this session, an RSVP is required.  A minumum number of 10 students is required to host this session, so if you sign-up to attend, please plan on being there.  If you sign-up and find you cannot attend, please notify Nicole Schwab ASAP.  To RSVP for this presentation, please email Nicole at nmschwab@buffalo.edu no later than Friday, April 10.
