Veterinary Medicine
A Working Plan
If you plan to attend Veterinary school directly after graduation, here is one possible timetable to follow:
Freshman
- Coursework: MATH 121-122 or 141-142; CHEMISTRY 101-102; ENGLISH 101-201; BIOLOGY 200-201.
- Begin involvement in health related volunteer work.
- Join and become active in clubs and organizations - join APMS, MHRP.
- Get to know professors. See the preprofessional health advisor at least once.
Sophomore
- Coursework: CHEMISTRY 201-202 or equivalent; ENGLISH LIT. if needed due to waiver.
- Continue volunteer work with animals - seek varied settings.
- Maintain participation in clubs and organizations; apply for AED Honor Society membership.
- Get to know professors. See the preprofessional health advisor at least once.
- For Cornell Early Admission: obtain application from Cornell and complete by April 1; take GRE in February.
Junior
(or 16 months prior to intended date of entry to medical or dental school)
- Coursework: PHYSICS 101/151-102/152 or equivalent; complete other courses required for MCAT
- See the preprofessional health advisor in the fall.
- Seek references; send to Preprofessional Health Advising Office by deadline.
- Plan for review for professional exams - GRE (required for Cornell), MCAT, or VCAT, depending on schools to which you apply.
- Obtain Preprofessional Health Committee Application - April 1 deadline.
- Take the GRE, MCAT or VCAT.
- Continue involvement in animal care work and maintain participation in clubs and organizations.
Senior
- Coursework: BIOCHEMISTRY 403; complete any other needed coursework. Update preprofessional health advisor.
- Pay careful attention to all deadlines for each school. September is the lastest GRE you can take and still meet deadlines. MCAT or VCAT may be retaken if needed.
- Obtain service and non-service school applications. October 1 is the VMCAS deadline. Complete secondary applications by deadline.
- If necessary, obtain Preprofessional Health Committee Application in July; complete by September 1.
